Protecting Your Face This Winter

Hi Team, the weather is starting to turn cold and already I can feel it in my cheeks. What's more is I love my walks and runs. Is there anything I can use to protect my skin this autumn and keep it looking moisturised and fresh? Love the site. Haley

Hi Hayley This is a very common question and we get asked it a lot around this time of year. The skin starts to get dehydrated with the colder temperatures and this results in dull, dry and irritated skin. In order to protect the skin, we need to understand why the colder temperatures affect our skin. During autumn and winter weather dry skin is common because the humidity level outside drops. When the air outside is cold and dry, the water in your skin evaporates more quickly, this makes your skin feel dry and tight, and makes it look flakey.

A few tips to consider for your home to help with this are using a humidifier, which will add moisture to dry, heated air and sealing your home which prevents the cold, dry air outside from paying you an unwelcome visit.

That being said we can offer you a number of other solutions and we can recommend some quality products at the end to prevent your skin from drying out especially if you are a keep outdoorsie!

Hydrate often. Keep your skin and mouth moist by drinking water throughout the day. This sounds basic but you'd be surprised how often clients choose the softdrink, coffee or tea over a glass of water. Water is essential for us and we promise that'll you'll notice a difference in your skin health if you up your water intake.

Adjust you daily routine by shortening your showers, lower the temperature and avoid harsh cleaners. Don't worry, you don't have to lower it too much.

Taking vitamin supplements to build up the skins immunity, for example Vitamin A is essential for skin health and Vitamin C is fantastic for lighting and hydrating the skin. Take these supplements daily in addition to a healthy diet. Plenty of greens and fruit.

Moisturising is essential to keep the skin from feeling tight and dry. Picking the right moisturiser is key for your skin type. And applying it morning and night. And reapplying after exercising or outdoor walking.

Wearing an SPF (sun protection) everyday is absolutely essential to act as a barrier layer and protect your skin. And reapplying if you are outdoors exercising. Yes even in the winter in dark and dreary weather. Most clients are surprised when we suggest this but SPF is a wonderful barrier against harsh autumnal weather and cold biting winds.

Be kind to your skin and treat yourself to some soothing and hydrating face masks. This will give it an extra boost of moisture and give it that fresh bright feeling everyone wants.

The Dermalogica MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque is a proven winner and one we suggest to our clients the most. It is a great restorative masque for skin exposed to stress especially the biting winds of autumn and winter. It Increases elasticity, boosts collagen synthesis and repairs daily damage triggered by free radicals.
